We currently seek a director of DevOps to join our technology team. In this role, you will lead a team of four web developers and one QA specialist, providing hands-on guidance and helping establish best practices in current and new technologies through code reviews and nurturing a team culture of technical excellence and innovation. The director will execute stakeholder projects across the organization in a WordPress development environment, as well as infrastructure projects for the DevOps team.
You will do invaluable work:
- Provide technical leadership for web developers in the coding of WordPress (PHP) websites, plug-ins, and SaaS customizations, implementing code review processes for increased collaboration and knowledge sharing
- Mentor web developers in current and new technologies, providing expertise through hands-on guidance and recommending professional-development resources
- Write testable, scalable, and efficient code in a WordPress development environment in support of organizational projects
- Establish and maintain coding and development standards, automating processes and standards where possible in collaboration with the DevOps engineer
- Collaborate with the DevOps engineer in executing infrastructure projects, ensuring systems and processes are scalable, secure, and reliable
- Collaborate with the QA specialist and developers of DevOps on establishing and implementing best practices throughout the software-development cycle
- Collaborate cross-departmentally concerning UX/UI design standards and integrations, collecting data as needed
- Stay current with technology trends, introducing new technologies where appropriate, and ensure the DevOps team spends 10% of its time on innovation
- Create documentation for newly developed features or processes, for both the DevOps team and the organization
- Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures
- Perform any other duties assigned by team leader
Your qualifications will take our technology team to the next level:
- Senior-level, hands-on experience in WordPress web-development, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript/AJAX, PHP, consuming and developing APIs, and change/release management processes
- Minimum two years’ experience in a technical leadership role
- Relevant certifications in computer science or a related field (a plus)
- Experience in mobile-first development
- Solid understanding of UX/UI and accessibility principles
- Deep knowledge of the software-development cycle, with experience implementing and administering best practices in a highly collaborative environment
- Problem-solving skills, with an ability to listen and understand stakeholders’ questions and needs
- Ability to operate in a highly detailed and organized manner while remaining flexible as the organization’s needs and priorities change
- Fluency in written and spoken English (Spanish or Portuguese as a first or second language a plus)
- Availability for occasional travel for conferences or retreats
- Comfort working autonomously or hyper-collaboratively in a fully remote environment
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to consistently meet deadlines (project-management experience a plus)
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively at all levels of the organization

He leads a team of developers and IT professionals dedicated to helping Mercy For Animals achieve its vision through information technology. With over 20 years’ experience creating and managing high-performing technology teams around the globe, Travis has supported organizations ranging from local, regional, and international mission-driven nonprofits to emerging startups and multinational corporations backed by private equity. He is delighted to see technology play a role in transforming people’s perception of plant-based foods and looks forward to a world where plant-based eating is the norm. Travis and his wife, Stephanie, live in the Tampa Bay area in a home ruled by their rescue dog and bird.
Compensation and Benefits
Earn an annual salary of around $111,000–$115,000 (paid hourly), depending on qualifications. In addition to a collaborative and innovative work environment, you will be able to take part in our benefits package, including no- or low-cost health, vision, and dental insurance; generous paid time off and sick leave; and 401(k) retirement plan, with a dollar-to-dollar employer match of up to 3% of your annual earnings.
